Water Towns near Shanghai: Zhujiajiao, Zhouzhuang, Wuzhen and Tongli
Around Shanghai, old canal towns keep the slow rhythm of the past: arched stone bridges, whitewashed houses with black tiles, and boats gliding past teahouses. They're the perfect contrast to the skyscrapers of Shanghai.
How they compare
- Zhujiajiao: about 1 hour from central Shanghai, even by metro (Line 17). The easiest half-day trip, with a lively main street and a 16th-century five-arch bridge.
- Zhouzhuang: about 1.5 hours. One of the most famous, with the classic "double bridge". Busy at midday, lovely in the evening.
- Tongli: about 1.5 hours, near Suzhou. Quieter and more lived-in, with the Tuisi Garden, a UNESCO-listed classical garden.
- Wuzhen: about 2 hours. The most polished and atmospheric, especially the West Scenic Zone at night when the canals are lit. Best with an overnight stay.
Which one should you choose?
- Short on time: Zhujiajiao.
- Best overall experience: Wuzhen, with one night there.
- Quiet and authentic: Tongli.
- Combining with Suzhou gardens: Tongli or Zhouzhuang.
Tips
- Go early or stay late. Day-trip crowds peak from late morning to mid-afternoon.
- Take a boat ride: the boatman rows you under the bridges, often singing.
- Try local snacks: braised pork knuckle in Zhouzhuang, rice cakes and fresh tea.
- Weekdays are much calmer than weekends.
