Private Tour or Group Tour in China? How to Choose

Updated · Oriental Culture Travel

China rewards good planning: the distances are big, the sights are busy and the language is new. You can travel independently, join a group tour or take a private tour. Here's how the two tour options compare.

Group tours

Pros - Usually the lowest price per person. - Everything is arranged, and you meet other travellers.

Cons - A fixed schedule: early starts, set meal times and little free time. - Shopping stops are common on cheaper tours. - The pace is set for the whole bus, not for you.

Private tours

Pros - Your own pace. Start late, stay longer where you love it, skip what you don't. - Your own guide and car. No waiting for others, door-to-door transfers, and a guide who answers your questions. - Built around you. Hotels, food, activities and rest days that fit your group, whether that's young children, grandparents or a photography trip. - Easier for families and special needs: child seats, slower walking days, dietary needs.

Cons - A higher price per person than a big group, though the gap narrows for families and groups of four or more.
