Is China Safe for Tourists? What to Know Before You Go
Yes. China is one of the safest countries in the world to travel in. Violent crime against visitors is very rare, cities are busy late into the night, and public places are well lit and closely watched. Most travellers say they feel safer walking around Beijing or Shanghai at midnight than in many cities at home.
Street safety and solo travel
- Big cities have police and security staff everywhere, and CCTV covers most streets and stations.
- Walking alone at night in central areas is normal, including for women travelling solo.
- Pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in very crowded spots, such as busy metro lines and famous sights on holidays. Keep your phone in a front pocket.
Common scams (and how to avoid them)
- The "tea house" or "art student" invitation. A friendly stranger suggests tea or an exhibition, then you get a huge bill. Politely decline invitations from people who approach you near tourist sights.
- Unofficial taxis. At airports and stations, use the official taxi queue or book with DiDi. See our guide to essential apps.
- Fake tickets. Buy entrance tickets on official channels; many sights now need your passport number.
Traffic is the real risk
The biggest everyday danger is the road. Electric scooters are silent and often ride on pavements, and cars may turn while you cross on green. Look both ways, even on one-way streets, and cross with the crowd.
Health and food safety
- Tap water is not for drinking. Bottled water is cheap and everywhere, and hotels provide it free.
- Restaurant food is generally very safe. Busy places with high turnover are the best sign.
- Big cities have international hospitals and clinics with English-speaking doctors. Bring travel insurance and your regular medicines.
Money and documents
Carry your passport: hotels, trains and many sights need it. Mobile payment means you rarely carry much cash. See how to pay in China.
