Seeing Giant Pandas in Chengdu: The Complete Guide
Chengdu is the panda capital of the world. Sichuan's mountains are the giant panda's home, and the city has the best places on Earth to see them up close. Here is how to make the most of it.
Where to see pandas
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The most popular choice, about 30–40 minutes from the city centre. Dozens of pandas of all ages live in large, leafy enclosures, from playful cubs to sleepy adults, along with red pandas. It's the easiest visit and perfect for families.
Dujiangyan Panda Base. About 1.5 hours from Chengdu, in greener, quieter hills. It focuses on rescue and care, and has run visitor programmes where you can help prepare bamboo and food. Availability changes, so ask us before you go.
Wolong and Bifengxia. Further into the mountains, closer to the pandas' wild habitat. Fewer visitors, beautiful scenery and a longer journey: worth it for a nature-focused trip.
Go early: pandas are morning animals
Pandas are most active in the morning, especially around feeding time. By late morning many are asleep in the trees. The best plan:
- Arrive at opening time (usually 7:30 am).
- Head straight to the cub and adult enclosures before the crowds.
- Leave by late morning and spend the afternoon in the city.
Tickets
- Tickets for the Chengdu base must be booked in advance with your passport number, usually through the official channels.
- Daily numbers are limited, so book as soon as your dates are set, especially in spring, summer and holidays.
- Electric shuttle carts inside the base save a lot of walking, which is handy with children or older travellers.
Can you hold or feed a panda?
Holding pandas is no longer allowed, to protect their health. Some bases have offered volunteer or "keeper for a day" programmes where you help prepare food and see the pandas' daily routine, but these change often and need booking well in advance.
More to enjoy in Chengdu
After the pandas, Chengdu is all about slowing down: teahouses in People's Park, the Wenshu Monastery, Sichuan opera with its lightning-fast face-changing, and of course Sichuan food. Ask for mild versions if you don't like spice. See our Chengdu page for more.
