Best Time to Visit China: A Month-by-Month Guide
China is huge, so there is a good destination in every month of the year. As a rule, spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) bring the most comfortable weather across most of the country. The trick is to match the region to the season and to avoid the big Chinese holiday weeks.
The short answer
- Best overall: mid-April to May, and mid-September to October.
- Best for clear skies in the north: October. Beijing's autumn is dry, sunny and golden.
- Best summer escape: Yunnan, where Kunming is known as the "City of Eternal Spring", and the mountains of Zhangjiajie.
- Best value: November and March, outside the holidays, with fewer crowds and good hotel prices.
Season by season
Spring (March–May). Blossoms in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai, green terraces in Guilin, and mild days for walking. Late May starts to warm up in the south.
Summer (June–August). Hot and humid in Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou, with rain in June and July along the Yangtze. Mountains and the high plateau stay pleasant: Yunnan (Lijiang and Shangri-La are cool even in July), Zhangjiajie and the Great Wall in early morning. Summer is school holiday season, so book early.
Autumn (September–November). The classic time to go. Clear skies in Beijing and Xi'an, golden leaves on the Great Wall, harvest colours in Guilin and comfortable city days in Shanghai and Hangzhou.
Winter (December–February). Cold and dry in the north, with Beijing below freezing at night, and mild in the south. Shanghai and Hangzhou are crisp and quiet. Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Yunnan are pleasant. Snow on the Forbidden City is a rare and beautiful sight.
Region by region
- Beijing: April–May and September–October. Dry, cold winters and a hot July.
- Xi'an: April–May and September–October, much like Beijing.
- Shanghai and Hangzhou: April–May and October–November. The rainy season runs from mid-June to mid-July.
- Guilin: April–October. The rivers are fullest in summer and the views clearest in autumn.
- Zhangjiajie: April–October. Mist makes the stone pillars magical, and winter sometimes brings snow.
- Chengdu and Chongqing: March–May and September–November. Chongqing summers are very hot.
- Yunnan: all year, with a dry, sunny season from November to April.
- Guangzhou and Shenzhen: October–April. Warm all year, with typhoon season from July to September.
Holidays to avoid
During these weeks hundreds of millions of people travel inside China. Trains sell out, prices rise and famous sights get very busy:
- Chinese New Year (Spring Festival): late January or February. In 2027 it falls on 6 February.
- Labour Day: 1–5 May.
- National Day "Golden Week": 1–7 October.
If your dates fall in these weeks, a private guide and car make a big difference: early starts, quieter entrances and smart timing keep the crowds manageable.
